CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Inside an unused conference room on the hotel’s lowest floor, Darcy sits with her arms wrapped around her children’s shoulders. Jennifer trembles beneath a blanket, her eyes red and wary. A group of deputies and GCPD officers sneak peeks at the Gellar family from across the room. Even Hunter leans against his mother’s shoulder with his hands buried inside his sweatshirt pockets.

A mauve rug patterned by concentric figures stretches the length of the rectangular room. Black tablecloths drape over three round tables separated by regular intervals. A long table stands at the front of the room, where Agent Fisher lays out his tablet and studies the terrain around Rocky Mount with Hensel. Carpet cleaner tickles Darcy’s nose and makes her eyes water.

Hensel approaches Darcy and her family, sighing and shaking his head.

“You didn’t find Rivers,” Darcy says, already knowing the answer.

“He couldn’t have slipped through the checkpoints. My guess is he’s still inside the perimeter. We’ll smoke him out.”

“You won’t, Eric.”

“About this trip to Rocky Mount. The locals are on the scene, but their chief wants the FBI on site when they investigate the quarry.”

“You’re leaving?”

“Yes. Agent Fisher will stay in Genoa Cove to coordinate the search. I want you to come with me to Rocky Mount.”

Darcy drops the blanket off her knees and glances at Hunter and Jennifer.

“I’m not leaving my kids. Whatever present Rivers left for me, I’m not interested.”

Hensel glances at Julian, who guards the double doors beside Officer Faust.

“What if you left Hunter and Jennifer with Officer Haines? It would only be a few hours.”

“We’re right here, you know?” Jennifer glares bullets into Hensel. “You don’t need to act as if we can’t hear you.”

“Okay, Jennifer,” Hensel says, dropping to one knee in front of Darcy’s daughter. The teenage girl leans back in her chair. “I’ll ask you directly. Both you and your brother. Are you willing to stay with Officer Haines for the rest of the afternoon while your Mom and I drive to Rocky Mount?”

“Doesn’t sound like my mother wants to go,” Hunter says, watching Hensel from the corner of his eye.

“No, she doesn’t,” Hensel says before swinging his eyes to Darcy. “But your mother wants what you want. To end this forever. We don’t know why Michael Rivers feels it’s important for your mother to accompany me to Rocky Mount, but this might be our best chance to catch him.”

Jennifer shakes her head.

“It’s a trap.”

“Is that what you’re worried about?”

“Think about it. If this guy wants you and Mom out of the way, this is the perfect opportunity with both of you exposed.”

Jennifer’s clear thinking knocks Hensel back on his heels. He lowers his head and rubs the back of his neck.

“Words of wisdom, Jennifer. You’re a Gellar, there’s no questioning that. But we won’t be alone. The local police and sheriff’s department will be on the scene, and that’s not counting the crime scene investigators. You want us to catch Michael Rivers, right Jennifer?”

Darcy bites her tongue. Though he makes sense, Hensel is manipulating her daughter.
